Kids Can Conduct!

In this video, there are 2 clips which show my second grade class learning how to conduct for the first time. This lesson connects to the standard MU.2.S.1.2: Conduct using expressive elements (e.g., dynamics, tempo). In the first part of the video, the students are listening and interpreting Hall of the Mountain King through conducting. Later in the video they are learning to conduct Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy. Notice how their physical demeanor and tools change between the clips. Then there is a discussion about “Where the orchestra is” in the video. This is a common discussion question that they are asked in this curriculum unit.

Surprise Symphony!

This clip is from my Halloween themed Surprise Symphony lesson. This lesson incorporates Dalcroze Eurythmics and rhythm representation using “Ghost” and “Pumpkin.” This section particularly related to standard MU.2.S.1.1: Improvise rhythms or melodies to enhance songs, stories, and poems. The clip begins when I am having them individually come up with a 4 beat rhythm utilizing the words, that the class repeats while using the body percussion they assigned to the words. (in this class clapping and stomping) Then I move into incorporating dynamics into a set pattern, which reflects the rhythm in the Surprise Symphony video. After that, I show them the sheet music and we discuss what Surprise Symphony might mean before I show them the video. There were some behavior issues that I had to harness before starting the video, in order to ensure they were paying attention.
